A Tribute to Our Distinguished Former Chancellor

Some people have commented that I do not update my blog regularly. While this is not down to any lack of things with which to update it (I'm sure that most reading this will be aware of the fact that Jon Wayman and Phil Poots come up with quotable material daily), I have felt as of late that there has been very little to mention with the gravitas sufficient enough to adorn my blog. That is why this week I would like to dedicate this post especially to Sir Kenneth Dover, our illustrious and esteemed former Chancellor. I do not claim to hold particularly strong sentimental ties to the University of St. Andrews, but what this man has contributed to the study of the Classics alone is worthy of a mention several times over. I'm sure Gayman would be more than happy to discuss with you in detail his theory of 'active' and 'passive' participation in Greek homosexual relationships. Also, and perhaps on a slightly lesser note, he is responsible for a commentary and vocabulary of Theokritos' Idylls which have greatly assisted me this semester. He is a scholar to emulate, an archetypal figure of the old school of thought that stressed a strong education in the Classics first and foremost. I hope that one day, maybe, I might grow up to be just like him.....
